The first, a Basque carol, Khanta Zagum (Companions All Sing Loudly), is treated contrapuntally and womewhat soloistically in the opening in the upper woodwinds and cornets, and important arrivals are accentuated by the full ensemble. Sleigh bells indicate there is no denying what season it is! The German carol, O Tannenbaum, follows with a majestic and reverent flavor. The tempo then quickens to the dance-like and lighthearted Neapolitan carol, Canzone d'i Zampognari (When Christ Our Lord Was Born), and the piece ends on a festive fortissimo. (2:30)
