Symphony No. 8 "Unfinished" (First Movement) - Popplers Music
Skip to content

Schubert's Symphony No. 8 is a timeless work that consistently remains a popular staple in the orchestral repertoire. It was composed in the autumn of 1822, yet not performed or published until well after the composer's death. The first performance was in Vienna in December of 1865. The widely recognized title is, of course, drawn from the fact that only two completed movements survive. Music historians have debated the completeness of the work, but the existence of a substantial piano sketch of the third movement makes it clear that Schubert intended to eventually compose a four-movement work. This arrangement maintains the lyrical and energetic characteristics of Schubert's original work.
