The iconic symbol and popular favorite ride at fairs and theme parks is the carousel. Complete with carnival music and horses or other animals that "gallop" up and down, the carousel possibly dates as far back as 500 A.D. and was used first for training military horseman. Some of the old carousels that have been around for decades or longer can be quite haunting. They have always fascinated me with their history, places traveled, and the master craftsmanship and incredible detail that make them works of art. At the same time, old carousels in particular can seem a bit creepy which may stem from some stereotypes of carnivals and from film and TV that frequently depict them as cursed or haunted by spirits.
