Compensating System
This euphonium is equipped with a full compensating system. This means that the euphonium utilizes extra tubing to correct pitch inaccuracies in the lower register that arise when multiple valves are used together, particularly when the fourth valve is depressed. Four-valve euphoniums, and other valved brass instruments, can have a tendency to play sharp in the lower register when certain valve combinations are used. A compensating system addresses this by routing air through an additional set of tubing when the fourth valve is depressed, effectively lengthening the air column and lowering the pitch. This improves intonation, allows the player to use conventional fingerings in the low range instead of slide pulling, and enables the playing of a full chromatic scale starting from the lowest note of the euphonium’s range.
