In the Middle Ages, master stone masons built immense, light-filled cathedrals with vast, reverberant interiors. In spite of the presence of these awe-inspiring churches, medieval existence was a daily struggle for most people, marked by hard labor, hunger and disease. Stonework evokes both the adversity and spiritual transcendence of medieval life, using musical materials borrowed from both the 12th century and heavy metal rock.
